HV Protection Technician

Join Ampcontrol's High Voltage team in Townsville and play a critical role in supporting the testing, commissioning and maintenance of high voltage protection systems across Australia's mining, utilities, industrial and infrastructure sectors.

This role offers an exciting opportunity for either an experienced electrician with protection testing experience or a recent Electrical Engineering graduate looking to develop practical, hands-on skills in high voltage protection systems. Working alongside a team of highly skilled protection specialists, you'll gain exposure to real-world HV assets, commissioning activities and advanced protection technologies while building a rewarding career in the energy sector.

You'll work across a diverse range of generation, transmission, distribution and industrial power systems, supporting projects that help keep critical electrical infrastructure operating safely and reliably.

What You'll Do

As a Protection Technician, you will be responsible for:

• Assisting with the testing, commissioning and maintenance of HV protection systems and associated equipment
• Supporting protection relay testing, fault investigations and commissioning activities
• Conducting field and laboratory-based testing activities on electrical infrastructure
• Interpreting electrical schematics, protection drawings and technical documentation
• Assisting with troubleshooting, diagnostics and technical investigations
• Preparing test reports, commissioning records and technical documentation
• Supporting project delivery across mining, utilities, industrial and infrastructure sectors
• Ensuring compliance with relevant standards, procedures and safe work practices
• Working closely with customers, project teams and senior technical specialists
• Maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality and customer service

About You

To be successful in this role, you may come from one of the following backgrounds:

Option 1: Trade Qualified Electrician

• Electrical Trade Qualification (Cert III Electrotechnology - Electrician)
• Experience in protection testing, commissioning, HV maintenance or electrical infrastructure environments
• Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills
• Ability to interpret electrical drawings and technical documentation
• Interest in developing specialist expertise in HV protection systems

Option 2: Graduate Electrical Engineer

• Bachelor of Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualification
• Strong interest in power systems and electrical protection
• Sound technical aptitude and willingness to learn in a hands-on field environment
• Ability to analyse technical information and solve complex problems
• Desire to build a long-term career in HV protection systems and commissioning

• Current Class C Driver Licence or ability to obtain
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Commitment to safety, quality and customer service excellence
• Willingness to travel to customer sites across Queensland and interstate as required

Highly Regarded

• Protection relay testing or commissioning experience
• Experience with power systems, substations or electrical infrastructure
• Knowledge of generation, transmission or distribution networks
• Advanced Diploma in Electrical Engineering
• Experience within mining, utilities or industrial sectors
• High Voltage Switching Operations certification
• Current LV Rescue and CPR qualifications
• Experience with SEL, ABB, Schneider, Siemens or GE protection systems
• EWP, Working at Heights, Forklift or MR Licence qualifications
