The Department

The Acute Dialysis Unit (ADU) is an integral part of the Alfred Renal Service, providing dialysis for new and acute patients, those requiring hospitalization, respite or highly complex care. ADU is co-located with Ward 4 West A (4WA) and has 7 dialysis points of care. It operates 6 days a week, as well as providing an on-call service for urgent out-of-hours treatments.  The ADU staff perform hemodialysis treatments in the ADU as well as at the patient bedside across The Alfred site, including ICU, Ward 4WB (COVID+), cardiac unit and Emergency Department.

The Alfred Specialty Medicine Program within the Operations Division comprises six clinical units, including Clinical Genetics and Genomics, Dermatology, Endocrine and Diabetes, Gastroenterology, Renal, and Rheumatology. The program provides admitted services, including multi-day care (Ward 4WA) and same-day dialysis services (The Alfred, Caulfield, and Sandringham campuses), as well as specialist outpatient and ambulatory services.

The Role

Every Alfred Health nurse must practice in accordance with the Alfred Health Nursing Professional Practice Framework. The Professional Practice Framework defines the elements of nursing practice that improve the care and experience of our patients and aligns with the Patients Come First Strategy. It is comprised of six domains that are crucial to maintain standards, lead change, and add value to healthcare. These domains are Comprehensive Care, Workforce, Leadership, Professional Development, Research and Informatics.

The ADU ANUM role is integral to the coordination and delivery of daily dialysis treatments, ensuring that care is provided safely, effectively, and in a timely manner. Working in close collaboration with medical, nursing staff and the wider multidisciplinary team, the position prioritises treatments, allocates resources, and supports the seamless flow of patients through the service. It plays a central part in clinical coordination, guiding the transition of care between services and maintaining high standards of practice across all aspects of dialysis delivery.

In addition to its clinical focus, the role supports the 4WA and ADU Nurse Manager in managing staff and operational issues, often taking charge of shifts and providing leadership to the nursing team. It requires strong communication and organisational skills to oversee access and patient flow, while fostering collaboration across departments.
