About the Team

Melbourne Health Centre (MSHC) has been in operation for 100 years having been established in 1918 as a specialised unit for the diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The service has established a reputation for clinical excellence by providing high quality sexual health care. Services provided by MSHC include screening, testing, counselling, information, referral, health education and clinical management of STIs including HIV treatment and prevention. The Centre is a leading facility in sexual health research. MSHC employs approximately 95 staff, comprising Administrative Staff, Counsellors, Medical Officers, Nurses, Pharmacists, Laboratory Scientists and Researchers. Research Nurses at MSHC play an important role in developing and supporting research projects undertaken at the centre.

About the Role

Sexual Health Nurses provide direct clinical services for clients, who are at risk of, or concerned about blood borne viruses (BBVs), STIs and their sexual health. Clients are assessed, prioritised, tested and treated via both our tele health and walk in service.  They provide specific HIV care for people living with HIV in our HIV service, called The Green Room.  Nurses work within a multidisciplinary team and interact sensitively and non-judgmentally with our diverse client group as well as their fellow multidisciplinary colleagues. Our nurses rotate through all roles based on operational requirements, including phone triage, testing and treament, HIV services and follow up of client results. 

Duties

MSHC nurses are responsible for the provision of specialist sexual health nursing services:

Education training and assessment are provided to ensure and support nurses to work within their scope of practice.

The position requires the person to work in the following roles

  • Triage roles
  • Clinical assessment and treatment  
  • Serology Room blood taking and administering injectable vaccines and antibiotics
  • Telephone results and Information
  • HIV service
  • Follow up of Results
  • Support and education of peers, and students.

Skills & Experience

Essential                   

  • Current registration as Registered Nurse Division 1 with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia
  • Experience in providing sexual health nursing care
  • Accredited Nurse Immuniser 
  • Perform HIV testing in accordance with the ASHM HIV testing guidelines
  • Willingness to undergo Police Check and Working with Children Check
  • Accredited Cervical Screening Nurse (CST/pap provider)

Desirable

  • Relevant postgraduate qualification or working towards post graduate qualification in sexual health and/or HIV or relevant field
  • At least 2 years experience as a sexual health nurse, community AOD or other relevant nursing experience
