The role:
We’re looking for an experienced Asphalt Laboratory Technician to join our Materials Technology Centre in Hazelmere. This is a hands-on role working within a small asphalt lab team, responsible for end-to-end testing, validation, and reporting of production samples. You’ll be trusted to manage your own workflow, ensure testing accuracy, and identify issues before they impact production.
Day-to-day, you will:
- Collect and receive asphalt samples from production
- Perform testing in line with strict procedures and timeframes
- Review, validate and record results with a high level of accuracy
- Re-test and escalate non-conforming results as required
- Enter data into laboratory systems and Excel-based reporting templates
- Assist with reporting and sign-off of results (experience advantageous)
- Contribute to root cause analysis of non-conforming products
- Monitor trends and support continuous improvement of product performance
- Ensure all testing aligns with Inspection Test Plans (ITPs) and customer requirements
- Ensure compliance with quality standards (AS / Austroads methods, MRWA)
You may also have the opportunity to support mix design reviews and updates, assist with verification testing and technical analysis and contribute to broader quality and technical improvements.
This is a permanent, full time role working Monday – Friday, 6am – 2.30pm. There may be an occasional Saturday shift or night shift during busy periods.
The experience:
You’ll bring a background in asphalt lab testing (or construction materials testing eg. concrete or aggregates). You’ll thrive in working towards time-critical processes and can work efficiently without compromising accuracy, particularly when handling multiple samples at different stages. You will also bring the following skills and experience:
- Experience in asphalt or construction materials laboratory testing
- Strong understanding of testing procedures and quality control
- Ability to follow structured processes with high accuracy
- Strong attention to detail and data integrity
- Team-focused approach with a willingness to share workload
- Reliable, motivated with a strong work ethic
- Experience with asphalt mix design (desirable) or willingness to learn
- Strong Excel skills (data entry, trend analysis, basic formulas)
- Familiarity with NATA accreditation requirements
