About the Census

Every five years, the Australian Bureau of Statistics counts every person and household in Australia. This is called the Census of Population and Housing.

The Census is the largest data collection in Australia and provides some of the most valuable statistics. It helps us understand what we need now, and into the future.

The Census asks questions about age, country of birth, cultural background, living situation, work, and education.

Census data informs planning for schools, health care, transport and infrastructure.

Field Officers work within their designated local area. This role requires flexibility with the need to work across weekdays, evenings, and weekends to ensure Census data is being collected in a timely manner.
