About the Census Test:
The Census is the most comprehensive snapshot of Australia and tells the story of how we’re changing. It helps us understand what we need now, and into the future.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) conducts the Census every five years, counting every person and household in Australia. The Census asks questions about age, country of birth, cultural background, living situation, work and education. The information is used to estimate Australia’s population, distribute government funds, and plan services for individuals, families and communities.
Before each Census, it’s important to test how we’ll run it to ensure we’re ready to deliver a positive, safe and secure Census that is easy to complete. The Census Test requires Community Field Officers in selected areas across Queensland and Victoria.
Travel Requirements:
You will be required to use your own registered and comprehensively insured vehicle to travel to work areas. In metropolitan areas, workloads can be distributed over multiple suburbs, whereas in rural areas the workloads will be more widely dispersed. Proximity to a suitable work area will be considered when selecting applicants.
About the Role:
Community Field Officers play a key role in helping and supporting diverse population groups and members of the public in their community to successfully complete the Census.
In this role you will work at a local level, working a mix of weekdays, evenings and weekends. You will engage with the public to provide information about the Census, encourage participation and help people who may face barriers in completing their Census form. This role involves working closely with diverse population groups.
Community Field Officers are casual roles, with an hourly rate of $32.86 (inclusive of 25% casual loading) plus superannuation,
As a Community Field Officer, you will:
- Enable positive user experiences for hard to count and hard to reach population groups, by providing access to face-to-face Census support.
- Run Pop-up Hubs to promote the Census in locations with high foot traffic.
- Conduct information sessions and fill in the form sessions.
- Meet the needs of population groups requiring higher levels of support.
- Direct the public to existing Census self-service options.
- Issue paper Census forms.
- Answer general questions from members of the public about the Census.
- Complete all relevant administrative duties, including completing timesheets.
- Conduct field work with safety and care and ensure the safety and wellbeing of your team.
Key Qualities and Experience:
- Lived experience and/or experience working with and supporting any of the following groups:
- Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Peoples
- People from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.
- People experiencing homelessness.
- Experience working with people living with a disability, youth or older people is also desirable, as are people working in local councils, community services and other related areas.
- Experience in engaging with community organisations and groups at a local level.
- Self-motivated, able to work and make decisions independently under limited supervision.
- Communicate effectively with people from different backgrounds.
- Good attention to detail and a keen eye for accuracy.
- Skills in administration, including proficiency in Information Technology (IT) and implementing processes according to prescribed procedures.
- Ability to work in a busy, high-volume environment operating with tight deadlines and variable hours.
- An ability to use electronic devices such as mobile phones and tablets.
- Ability to liaise with venue providers, adhere to venue requirements (e.g. set up times), and conduct daily Work Health and Safety (WHS) checks to ensure event venues are safe to work in.
