A.B. Paterson College is seeking passionate, dedicated, and expert Music Tutors and Peripatetics to inspire and support students on their musical journeys through lessons and involvement in College ensembles.

 

We are now accepting applications for suitably experienced Music Tutors in the following areas:

  1. Saxophone and Woodwind specialist (Casual and peripatetic) 
  2. Vocal specialist (Peripatetic)
  3. Accompanist (Casual)

 

We are looking for educators who bring professionalism, enthusiasm, and a deep commitment to student development. Successful candidates will foster a love of learning, support student wellbeing, and contribute positively to the collaborative culture of the College.

Key Responsibilities

The Music tutors will deliver high-quality, student-centred tuition that develops technical skills, musical understanding, and confidence across a range of ages and abilities. They will prepare engaging lesson plans, set clear short- and long-term learning goals, and support students’ progress toward performances, examinations, and auditions. The role also contributes to ensemble rehearsals and school events, maintains professional and child‑safe practices, and communicates effectively with parents and the Head of faculty - Arts to ensure a cohesive, inclusive Arts program.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Saxophone and Woodwind specialist (Casual and peripatetic)
  • Able to teach beginner to advanced students. 
  • Experience directing bands and ensembles would be an advantage.
  • Able to work on Fridays and additional days as required.

2. Vocal specialist (Peripatetic)

  • Able to teach beginner to advanced students while promoting healthy vocal production.
  • Willing to support the already well-established choral programme and has the capacity to prepare students for solo and group performances, as well as examinations as required.
  • Required to work 1-2 days per week

3. Accompanist (Casual)

  • Experience as a choral accompanist and be willing to accompany vocal and instrumental students for assessments and examinations as required.
  • They must be able to work before and after school hours to support ensemble programme and be willing to work during the school day if required for support of the academic and choral programme.


What We’re Looking For

  • A relevant tertiary qualification or recognised music teaching credential is preferred but not always mandatory; demonstrable teaching outcomes and references can substitute.
  • At least 1–3 years of one‑to‑one and small‑group tuition across age ranges, demonstrating the ability to plan lessons and track progress.
  • Demonstrated performance experience on the relevant instrument(s) or voice.
  • Experience working with children and adolescents in a school, community music program, or private studio, showing classroom awareness and behaviour management skills.
  • Experience supporting or directing ensembles, participating in school concerts, and preparing students for public performance is expected.
  • Proven track record preparing students for external exams (e.g., AMEB, ABRSM) and auditions, including repertoire selection.
  • Prior school experience preferable.
  • Current Working with Children Check (Blue Card).
  • Current First Aid and CPR certificate or willing to obtain.
