SUMMARY

The position of Reagents Scientists I is within our Infectious Disease Developed Markets Business Unit located in Scarborough, Maine. This role will be responsible for producing antibodies for use in immunology-based chromatography and enzyme tests. The primary responsibility of the individual is the LF production and maintenance of the LF Technical Manufacturing Critical Reagent supply using Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains high-level GDP (Good Documentation Practice) expertise and ensures all documentation remains GDP-compliant.
  • Performs Change Actions and Quality Incident Actions as needed.
  • Responsible for maintaining quality systems as they relate to GMP/GLP. (Good Manufacturing Process and Good Laboratory Practice)
  • Regularly manages the safe storage and disposal of hazardous chemicals.
  • Executes cleaning procedures in accordance with Abbott regulation (glass/plasticware, barrels, lab space, etc.)
  • Maintains laboratory supplies (plastics/chemicals) to support production schedule.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures, laboratory, and maintenance safety procedures.
  • Performs in-process testing for manufacturing materials.
  • Performs general laboratory activities under BSL1 and BSL2 conditions, including working with potentially infectious material and pathogens.
  • Exercises good judgment on details of work when less common/ proposed methods/procedures are necessary and detects problems using standardization procedures based on sample condition, equipment difficulties, etc.
  • Works on problems of moderate and diverse scope in which analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Proposes potential solutions to more advanced problems.
  • Supports inventory tracking and data input into SAP. (Systems Applications and Products in Data Processing)
  • Supports the execution of Cycle Counts.
  • Routinely initiates QI/QM (Quality Incidents/Quarantine materials) for required materials.
  • Maintains and supports the Critical Reagents supply according to production schedule.
  • Responsible for assisting with product/process testing projects.
  • Investigates problem areas and areas of desirable improvement
  • Undertakes new procedures and observes proper safety precautions
  • Cross department cooperation to support Technical Product Support and/or Research and Development efforts.
  • Maintains quality systems and proper Good Manufacturing Practice and Good Laboratory Practice.
  • Understands and responds to internal customer needs
  • Maintains a broad range of knowledge of scientific principles and theories that must be applied to troubleshooting and diagnostic tests. 
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of these scientific principles combined with technical proficiency to maintain high standard of production.
  • Follows and supports Standard Operating Procedures and document systems.
  • Creates and follows protocols designed around product improvement
  • Able to perform technical procedures and use laboratory equipment
  • Maintains good verbal and written communication skills and provides timely and accurate reporting both internally and externally
  • Carries out duties in compliance with established business policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates commitment to the development, implementation and effectiveness of applicable Quality Processes as per ISO, FDA, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Responsible for exhibiting professional behavior with both internal/external business associates that reflects positively on the company and is consistent with the company’s policies and practices.
  • Responsibility to understand and maintain awareness of the quality consequences which may occur from the improper performance of their specific job.
  • Support department by performing related tasks as requested.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS | EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree (BA or BS) in biology, immunology, or chemistry or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior experience in gel techniques (ELISA, Zone Electrophoresis, Immunoelectrophoresis, IEF, Western Blot, SDS PAGE)
  • Minimum of 1-year laboratory experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior experience working in a company operating under ISO, FDA, or similar quality systems or regulations.
  • Familiarity with national and international testing standards related to mechanical and chemical testing.
  • Familiar with various chromatography methods (i.e. IEC, HPLC, Immunoaffinity, Protein A)

  • Biological Laboratory Skills: Proficient in pipetting (micro/repeater), graduated cylinder, scales (table/floor), , pH/conductivity meter, incubators, orbital shakers, Milli-Q, Centrifuges, UV analysis with UV spectrophotometer.
