Position Overview
The Manufacturing Engineering Technician will provide hands-on technical support to production operations within Abbott’s Transfusion Medicine division. This role is responsible for ensuring the reliable performance of automated manufacturing equipment and processes that support the global production of biologics and transfusion diagnostic products.
The technician will act as a key front-line resource, troubleshooting equipment issues, minimizing downtime, and maintaining operational readiness across automated and semi-automated systems to meet daily production targets while improving efficiency and product quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide real-time technical support to production lines, responding to equipment alarms, process interruptions, and mechanical or automation issues.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain a variety of manufacturing equipment, including:
- Automated filling and packaging systems
- Custom bottle assembly lines
- Fermentation and bioprocess equipment (10–1000L)
- Vision inspection systems
- Robotic pick-and-place units
- Labeling and material handling systems
- Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for assigned equipment and support training and mentoring of technicians and operators.
- Perform preventive maintenance, routine adjustments, and component replacements to ensure equipment reliability and uptime.
- Apply systematic troubleshooting techniques to diagnose and resolve technical issues independently.
- Maintain accurate documentation of maintenance activities, troubleshooting steps, and equipment performance.
- Collaborate with production, engineering, and maintenance teams to resolve issues impacting throughput, yield, and quality.
- Identify and implement process and equipment improvements to enhance efficiency and reduce recurring failures.
- Support supplier interactions to ensure parts and systems meet performance and cost objectives.
- Maintain a proactive, flexible approach to evolving production needs and priorities.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma with a minimum of 2 years of relevant technical training (e.g., Associate degree or trade school certification), or
- 6 years of equivalent hands-on experience in a related field.
- Experience in troubleshooting and supporting facilities, utilities, and manufacturing equipment (FUE).
- Strong ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across production, engineering, and maintenance teams.
- Self-motivated with strong organizational and prioritization abilities.
- Ability to train operators on equipment usage and provide technical guidance.
- Capable of managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines efficiently.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on mechanical or electrical experience in industries such as medical devices, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, food & beverage, aerospace, or automotive.
- Associate degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or related field.
- Experience working with PLC-controlled equipment (e.g., Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, Siemens).
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical drawings; familiarity with CAD tools such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks is a plus.
- Experience with CMMS systems (e.g., Maximo, SAP).
- Knowledge of Lean and Continuous Improvement methodologies (5S, Root Cause Analysis, Kaizen, etc.).
- Strong hands-on troubleshooting mindset with solid analytical and problem-solving skills.
