Job Summary
The Senior Scientist is responsible for conceiving, designing, and executing advanced independent research related to compound, assay, process, product, or method development. This role applies advanced scientific expertise to drive project outcomes, provides technical leadership, and ensures high-quality experimental design and execution in alignment with departmental and organizational goals.
Responsibility:
- Conceive, plan, design, and conduct advanced independent research aligned with project objectives
- Independently design and execute experiments to test hypotheses related to project outcomes
- Apply advanced scientific knowledge to determine experimental priorities and technical approaches
- Utilize Design of Experiments (DOE) methodologies as appropriate
- Ensure experimental quality through sound, independent experimental design
- Identify technical alternatives through literature review and data analysis
- Design, plan, and execute project-related tasks based on defined project goals and experimental design
- Present project results internally and externally to large, diverse audiences, including complex technical data
- Prepare and align project impact goals with departmental objectives
- Interact cross-functionally to share information and contribute to team success
- May serve as lead scientist, project leader, or key project contributor
- Provide technical direction, feedback, and mentoring to scientific and technical staff
- Train others on theoretical and practical aspects of techniques, processes, assays, and instrumentation
- Directly supervise technical personnel as assigned
- Recognize, troubleshoot, and resolve complex technical problems
- Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system
- Ensure compliance with laboratory safety standards and best practices
- May assume additional responsibilities such as Safety Officer or Emergency Control Force delegate
- Apply advanced technical writing skills to independently produce reports, protocols, and technical documents
- Review and evaluate technical writing prepared by others
- Utilize a wide range of analytical instruments and train others in their operation
- Apply basic computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, instrumentation-related software, and Abbott network systems
Skills:
- Strong ability to present complex technical data clearly to internal and external audiences
- Proven experience in training and mentoring scientific staff
- Expertise in experimental design, data interpretation, and problem-solving
- Familiarity with project planning, process updates, and research documentation
- Strong technical writing and communication skills
- Knowledge of laboratory environments, safety practices, and quality systems
Education:
- Ph.D. in a life or physical science preferred with up to two (2) years of research or industrial experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with additional progressive research experience sufficient to demonstrate equivalent expertise
- 4–7 years of relevant research or industrial experience
