The Role
As the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Officer you will you will be a member of a team that provides spatial analytical support to manage AARNet’s fibre optic network. In this role you will assist in mapping critical infrastructure which supports the education and research sector around Australia. Working within a small team of experts, there will be plenty of opportunities to develop your skills and innovate to expand the range of products the team offers. This role would suit an experienced professional, that is passionate about GIS and can be creative in their approach.
Responsibilities
Working within the GIS team to:
- Capture and validate as-constructed Infrasturature asset data (both Spatial & Aspatial) to meet maintenance, strategic planning and reporting requirements.
- Capture and validate existing infrastructure asset data (both Spatial & Aspatial), as required to meet maintenance and strategic planning needs.
- Providing professional technical support to internal and external stakeholders
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders to determine information requirements
- Work collaboratively on projects when required
- Produce maps to scale for locations across Australia utilising ArcGIS, AutoCAD and Open Spatial software.
- Undertake improvement activities associated with infrastructure data capture, data maintenance and verification of infrastructure related information
- Support the team to meet critical reporting requirements
- Utilising core AARNet technology to support the project tasks including (but not limited to) Word, Excel, Visio, Jira, Confluence, Zoom
- Proactively identifying areas for improvement across systems and processes
Expertise, experience & qualifications
Tertiary (Diploma or Bachelor) qualification in spatial information, planning or other relevant field or significant experience working in a similar spatial systems role
Important skills
- Knowledge of GIS technology and how it can be applied for the management of asset data (Preferably including ArcGIS and/or AutoCAD)
- The ability to learn and develop new skills and techniques specific to GIS and the mapping functions
- The ability to think logically and creatively and excellent interpersonal skills in relation to stakeholder engagement and team collaboration
- Investigative, analytical and research skills used to record, manipulate and present infrastructure and project data
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Good organisational and time management skills
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications
